For Reb Shlomo’s thirteenth yahrzeit, The Carlebach Shul
hosted a commemoration that would have made our rebbe
very proud. Clearly on display was the love, honor and devotion
his followers and talmidim have for Reb Shlomo these many
years after he left us.
Our “Carlebach” Kabbalat Shabbat service, adopted by so many
synagogues throughout the world, was led by our magnificent
Ba’al Tefillah, Yehuda Green. During Shabbat dinner, organized
and served with love by Julie Borla, Rabbi Naftali Citron offered
a history of the Carlebach family, dating back to Reb Shlomo’s
grandfather, Dr. Solomon (Shlomo) Carlebach. Chaya (Sister “Chay”) Poretsky and Rabbi Joel Greenblatt also shared memories
and divrei Torah with the overflowing crowd. A host of speakers at
lunch included Rebbetzin Hadassa Carlebach and Rabbi Ephraim
Buchwald.
On motzaei Shabbat hundreds of guests gathered from all over the
tri-state area to hear an array of performers offer a musical tribute
to the man whose music has spawned a generation of singers. The
concert was organized by Yaakov Dov Miller. The parade of talent
began with Heshy Broyde leading Havdalah, followed by
Soulfarm’s Noah Solomon and C. Lanzbom, the Nochi Krohn
Band, Elli Kranzler, Eitan Katz, Yehuda Green, Yisroel Williger and
Shloime Dachs. With the dance floor too small for such a large
audience, a line was formed that began snaking through the aisles.
The grand finale saw Shloime, Yehuda, Eitan and Nochi bring the
crowd to its feet once again, bringing to a close a three and a half
hour long extravaganza.
On Sunday, which was Reb Shlomo’s actual yahrzeit, Rabbi
Citron led a siyum with the able assistance of Rabbi Danny
Wise. Reb Zwe Padeh then showed a video of Reb Shlomo
teaching. The commemoration culminated on Sunday evening
with a concert by Reb Shlomo’s daughter, Neshama Carlebach.
